About this service

How autism & ADHD (AuDHD) diagnostic assessments work at IPC

Who these assessments are for

At IPC, our autism and/or ADHD diagnostic assessments are designed for individuals of all ages seeking clarity regarding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or related neurodevelopmental conditions (AuDHD). Assessments can be tailored to focus on ASD, ADHD, or both (AuDHD), and may also encompass the full scope of mental health concerns as part of our comprehensive Multidisciplinary Psychiatry Assessment.

How the assessment is conducted

Our assessment process is conducted virtually and typically requires 4 to 6 hours of your or your family's time. The evaluation is led by a psychiatrist with specialized expertise and extensive experience in diagnosing ASD, and is supported by our multidisciplinary team, which includes psychiatrists, social workers, and nurse practitioners. Each clinician brings their unique perspective and clinical skills to ensure a thorough, collaborative diagnostic process.

What you receive and next steps

Following the assessment, you will receive a detailed diagnostic report outlining diagnostic findings and rationale, psychosocial recommendations, evidence-based treatment recommendations, medication considerations (if indicated), and actionable next steps and referrals. Every patient and family is also offered a community navigation session with a social worker, where results are reviewed in detail and personalized assistance is provided to connect you with therapy providers, support groups, specialized clinics, and social services. For students, guidance on accessing educational assessments, advocacy resources, and community-based programs is also included. A multidisciplinary assessment led by a psychiatrist with specialized expertise in ASD and supported by an experienced clinical team provides clear diagnostic understanding and guides effective intervention and support planning.

Right fit for you?

When to seek an autism & ADHD diagnostic assessment

Indicators that may warrant a diagnostic assessment, grouped by area of concern. You do not need to identify with every item in a group — even a few may be reason to start a conversation with our team.

Autism Spectrum (ASD)

  • Delayed or limited language development, or ongoing communication challenges
  • Persistent difficulty with social interaction or understanding social cues
  • Unusual or highly focused interests, repetitive behaviours, or sensory sensitivities
  • Challenges in adapting to changes in routine or managing transitions
  • Difficulties developing or maintaining friendships
  • A history of being misunderstood or misdiagnosed in mental health or educational settings

ADHD

  • Persistent difficulties with attention, focus, or organization
  • Frequent forgetfulness or losing items necessary for tasks
  • Impulsivity, acting without thinking, or difficulty waiting for your turn
  • Restlessness, fidgeting, or difficulty remaining seated when expected
  • Challenges completing tasks, following instructions, or meeting deadlines
  • Struggles with time management or prioritizing activities

AuDHD (ASD + ADHD)

  • Features of both ASD and ADHD as described in the groups above
  • Complex presentations where inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity coexist with social communication differences, sensory sensitivities, or restricted interests
  • Previous inconclusive or unclear diagnoses, or the need for diagnostic clarification regarding both conditions
  • Difficulties that significantly impact functioning at home, school, work, or in relationships

Other reasons to seek an assessment

  • Desire for diagnostic clarity or a second opinion regarding ASD, ADHD, or other neurodevelopmental or mental health conditions
  • Interest in accessing therapy, specialized support services, or community resources
  • Preference for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary evaluation without extended wait times
  • Families seeking a thorough understanding of a loved one's strengths and support needs

Who our diagnostic assessment may not be appropriate for

Our service is a one-time diagnostic assessment involving a multidisciplinary team, not an individualized psychiatrist, and may not be suitable for individuals whose mental health conditions require ongoing or multiple assessments for accurate diagnosis and management, such as:

  • Complex neurodevelopmental disorders that require longitudinal evaluation (e.g., some cases of ASD and intellectual disability)
  • Personality disorders, which often require extended observation and repeated assessments
  • Early psychosis or schizophrenia spectrum disorders, where diagnosis may depend on evolving clinical presentation
  • Severe substance use disorders with fluctuating symptoms
  • Severe eating disorders, which typically require multidisciplinary and ongoing assessment
  • Cases involving significant forensic or legal complexity inclusive of IME's
  • Learning disabilities that require specialized testing and educational evaluation, which we can offer in partnership with Edcommodate
