About this service

How multidisciplinary psychiatric assessments work at IPC

A collaborative, multidisciplinary approach

Our multidisciplinary psychiatric assessments integrate the expertise of psychiatrists, social workers, and nurse practitioners to provide a comprehensive evaluation of mental health. Each clinician contributes their specialized knowledge in collaboration, ensuring a thorough and accurate diagnostic process.

What the assessment involves

The assessment is conducted virtually and typically requires 4 to 6 hours of the patient or family member's time, including completion of intake forms, individual assessments with each clinical team member, a review of medical history, and, where appropriate, collection of collateral information from caregivers or educators. The process culminates in a detailed report outlining diagnostic findings, treatment recommendations, medication plans, and actionable next steps.

Community navigation and next steps

Following the assessment, each patient receives a community navigation session. During this session, the social worker reviews the assessment results and recommendations in detail to ensure clarity and understanding. Community navigation can also include personalized assistance with identifying and connecting to relevant mental health resources, such as therapy providers, support groups, specialized clinics, and social services. For students, the session may also include guidance on accessing educational assessments and supports, advocacy resources, and community-based programs. Our assessments are designed to support patients and families in achieving diagnostic clarity, optimizing treatment strategies, and navigating available community resources.

Who should consider a multidisciplinary psychiatric assessment

Who this assessment may not be appropriate for

Our service is a one-time diagnostic assessment involving a multidisciplinary team, not an individualized psychiatrist, and may not be suitable for individuals whose mental health conditions require ongoing or multiple assessments for accurate diagnosis and management, such as:

  • Complex neurodevelopmental disorders that require longitudinal evaluation (e.g., some cases of ASD and intellectual disability)
  • Personality disorders, which often require extended observation and repeated assessments
  • Early psychosis or schizophrenia spectrum disorders, where diagnosis may depend on evolving clinical presentation
  • Severe substance use disorders with fluctuating symptoms
  • Severe eating disorders, which typically require multidisciplinary and ongoing assessment
  • Cases involving significant forensic or legal complexity inclusive of IME's
  • Learning disabilities that require specialized testing and educational evaluation, which we can offer in partnership with Edcommodate
