Psychiatry and Psychoeducational Assessment

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health; they can diagnose mental illnesses, prescribe medications, and provide medical management for psychiatric conditions. Psychologists can hold a doctoral degree in psychology and are licensed to assess, diagnose, and treat psychological issues through various forms of therapy and psychological testing, but they do not prescribe medications. While both psychiatrists and psychologists help people with mental health concerns, psychiatrists focus on medical and medication-based treatments, whereas psychologists provide therapy, counseling, and psychological diagnostic assessments.

Combining a psychoeducational assessment with a psychiatrist's evaluation offers a comprehensive understanding of both learning and mental health needs. This approach helps identify learning challenges and strengths through psychological testing, while also addressing any underlying or co-occurring mental health concerns with medical expertise. Together, these assessments provide a fuller picture, allowing for tailored recommendations, educational supports, and treatment options (including therapy or medication, if needed), so individuals receive the most effective and coordinated care in a timely manner.

It generally takes about 7 to 15 weeks for this assessment to be completed from the initial sign-up.

The average cost of this assessment is $5,000.00 total, and is usually covered under the psychology portion of private benefits, and additionally through health spending accounts (HSA) for the nurse practitioner components of the assessment. OHIP does not cover these assessments. OHIP will cover the cost of portions of assessments completed by a psychiatrist.

No, a referral is not required for private psychoeducational assessments. However, some insurance providers may require one for reimbursement purposes. For the psychiatric component of the assessment, the nurse practitioner will review referral components of the assessment.

We provide detailed invoices and receipts, including clinician credentials, licence numbers, and service breakdowns to support reimbursement claims.
